Introduced alongside its heavier sibling, the 1885 Single Shot “Low-Wall” rifle featured a lightened frame and was specifically designed for small-game hunting and target shooting using lower-pressure rimfire cartridges.
The Winchester Model 1885 Single Shot Low-Wall was introduced in 1885 as a lightweight companion to the High-Wall version. While the High-Wall was engineered to contain the pressures of big-game cartridges, the Low-Wall was created to serve the high demand for a nimble, accurate rifle chambered in smaller, lower-pressure calibers. Along with its bigger brother, it remained in production until 1920, contributing significantly to the approximately 140,000 total units of the Model 1885 series manufactured during that thirty-five-year span.
Mechanically, the Low-Wall version utilized the same John Moses Browning-designed falling-block action, where a lever stroke dropped the breechblock to allow for manual loading. The defining physical characteristic was the reduced height of the receiver walls, which left the hammer fully exposed. This modification was intended for cartridges like the .22 Long Rifle, .25-20,.32-20 and .38-55 Winchester. Because it was built for lighter duty, it often featured thinner barrels, typically ranging from 24 to 26 inches.
In the context of sport and hunting, the Low-Wall became the gold standard for "gallery" shooting and small-game hunting. Its superb accuracy made it a favorite for target shooters in the late nineteenth century who competed in indoor ranges and local matches. Farmers and ranchers prized it as a "varmint" rifle, capable of precise shots on small predators where the overkill of a larger caliber was unnecessary.
Users primarily appreciated the Low-Wall for its exceptional balance, with its light weight as a primary advantage, making it an effortless rifle to carry in the field all day. Gun industry historians and collectors celebrate the Winchester 1885 Single Shot Low-Wall as one of the finest small-bore target rifles ever produced.
